The qualifications gap

The qualifications gap: what the posting asks for versus what the content specialist job needs.

We counted, in the text of the 115 content specialist postings that carried a description, how often each kind of qualification is asked for. The phrases counted are listed in the report method; a phrase count over 115 postings says what the postings ask for, not whether the 138 employers who wrote them chose well.

What the content specialist job actually needs, in our experience:

  • Published work that can be tied to enquiries or sales, with the numbers
  • The habit of checking every claim against what the company can prove
  • Pages they chose not to write, or removed, and why
  • A working method for checking AI-assisted drafts before they go out
Before you post the job

Reasons to think twice before hiring a content specialist.

30 percent of content postings mention AI and 21 percent ask for any proof of results. Companies are asking for more content and for AI to help produce it, and rarely asking whether anything the person wrote brought in a customer.

  • Content specialist posts rarely ask for the record. 21 percent of content specialist postings ask for any proof of results and 2 percent ask for an AI or automation system the person built; 29 percent ask for a degree. A content specialist posting that does not ask to see finished work leaves the interview to do all the sorting.
  • The listed content specialist range is a floor, not the bill. 56 of 168 content specialist postings (33 percent) named a pay figure, with a median range of $60,000 to $79,074. Add benefits, recruiting and equipment and year one comes to about $108,005 before the person has produced anything.
  • Screening content specialist applicants is a job in itself. A median 56 people applied to each content specialist posting where LinkedIn showed a count (29 postings). Someone who knows the work has to read about 56 applications for each posting, and the figures above say the usual requirements will not sort them.
  • For a content specialist, you are bidding against the whole country. 55 percent of content specialist postings are marked remote, so the person you want can take an offer from any of the 138 employers advertising, in any state, without moving.
  • 3 years of content specialist experience sits at the top of the range. That is the median the first experience line asks for, where a content specialist posting states a number (37 postings). In our reading, that is the person the high end of the listed range, $79,074, is written for.

None of this says do not hire. It says what the 168 postings show about hiring for this role right now. When hiring a content specialist is still the right call is set out under "What goes wrong" below, and the comparison with a built system follows it.

What companies are asking for

What the postings ask for right now.

Titles that describe the same job: content specialist, content writer, copywriter, content strategist, content marketing specialist, content creator, digital content specialist. In our sample of 168 postings from 138 companies (September 2 to October 6, 2026), the most common titles were: Content Marketing Specialist; Content Writer / Contract / Remote / EST Hours; Content Strategist; Digital Content Coordinator (WNXP); Content Strategist, Editorial. 55 percent were marked remote.

The requirements we see most often in these postings, in our reading of them:

  • Writing and editing for the web, email and social channels in a consistent brand voice
  • Social media content, including short video that is shot and edited in house
  • Working knowledge of SEO (search engine optimization, getting found on Google) and a content system such as WordPress
  • Email newsletters and campaign copy
  • Analytics: reading which pieces brought visits, enquiries or sales
  • Using AI writing tools well, and catching what they get wrong
How to interview

Six questions that separate a real content specialist from a resume.

  1. Show me one piece you wrote that brought in customers. How do you know it did?
  2. Here are three facts about our business. What would you refuse to write from them, and why?
  3. Walk me through how you check a draft that an AI tool helped write before it is published.
  4. Which of our existing pages would you delete or merge, and what would you look at first to decide?
  5. Tell me about a piece that got attention and no business. What did you change afterwards?
  6. How do you find out what our customers actually ask before they call?
What goes wrong

What goes wrong after the hire, in our experience.

  • Volume becomes the measure. In our experience pages get published because the calendar says so, and many of them say what the neighbouring pages already said.
  • Nothing the person writes is checked against what the company can prove, so claims drift and somebody has to walk them back.
  • The writer, the strategist and the video creator are three skills; the person you can afford is usually strong at one.
  • Published pieces are never followed through to an enquiry or a sale, so nobody can say which ones earned their keep.

When the hire is the right call. Hiring a content specialist is the right call when the company has a real point of view and somebody has to carry its voice every day, when the subject needs an expert who also writes, or when video made in house is central to how you sell. In those cases hire, and give the person the checks and the measurement so the work is judged on customers, not on volume.

The role, plainly

What a content specialist actually does.

A content specialist produces what a company publishes: web pages, articles, emails, social posts and, more and more, short video. The title covers three different seats. The writer produces the words. The strategist decides what gets made and measures whether it worked. The creator shoots and edits for social channels. Small companies post one job and expect all three.

The postings we read name social media, email, search and video, and many of them now mention AI, usually as a tool the person is expected to use well. The work that takes a person is the judgment: knowing what the customer is really asking, what the company can truthfully say, and what should not be written at all.

The system, working

The content specialist work as a system: a demonstration.

The safe way to use AI for writing is a draft a person approves before it is published. This system works that way for review requests and the replies to them. The card below demonstrates content specialist work as real, working software that runs on invented people and invented companies. It is not a client's system.

Demonstration system, sample data

We do great work and forget to ask for the review, and the bad ones sit there unanswered.

Review desk

Marking a job complete sends the review request to every customer, an unhappy reply reaches the owner the same minute, and each review gets a drafted reply for the owner to approve.

The demonstration system on this page has its own prototype page: open the reputation manager prototype before you post the content specialist job.

The alternative

Instead of hiring a content specialist, have the system built and own it.

For the work a content specialist posting describes, ColabContent, a custom AI consulting firm in Boston, builds systems the client owns outright, with no per-user fees. That usually means:

  • A facts file and a publishing check: every claim on every page tied to a source, and nothing published that is not on the file
  • A demand check before anything is written: the real searches and the questions people put to AI assistants, with who answers them today
  • Drafts written from your own notes, policies and past answers for a person to approve, not invented
  • Measurement that follows each piece through to enquiries, so the next brief is written from what worked

Frequently asked questions

Questions owners ask before posting a content specialist job.

Each answer rests on the 168 content specialist postings ColabContent read between September 2 and October 6, 2026, on the BLS wage line for Writers and Authors, or on a price ColabContent publishes. Where an answer about hiring a content specialist is our judgment and not a figure, it says so, and the content specialist calculator above takes your own numbers.

What does a content specialist or content writer earn in 2026?

The pay table on this page shows the median range listed on current content specialist, content writer and content strategist postings, with the count behind it, beside the BLS median for Writers and Authors, the closest official occupation.

How much does a content writer cost a company all in?

Take the listed midpoint, add about 43 cents of benefits for every wage dollar (BLS ECEC, June 2026), then recruiting and equipment. The calculator on this page runs it with your own numbers; many writer postings are contract or part time, so change the salary line to match the post you plan.

Can AI replace a content writer?

It can draft. It cannot know what your company can truthfully claim, what your customers are really asking, or which page should not exist. The systems we build put a person's approval between the draft and the publish button and check every claim against a facts file.

What does ColabContent build instead of the hire?

The repeatable parts: the demand check before a brief, the facts file, drafts from your own material for a person to approve, and the measurement afterwards. Custom systems start at $10,000, one fixed fee, with a working prototype on your own data in 7 to 10 days before any build fee.

When is hiring a content specialist clearly right?

When someone must carry the company's voice every day, when the subject needs an expert who writes, or when in-house video is central to how you sell.

What does a content writer do, and should I hire one?

Content writer is one of the titles companies use for the content specialist role, and the postings we read commonly ask for writing and editing for the web, email and social channels in a consistent brand voice and for social media content, including short video that is shot and edited in house. Postings list it at a median $60,000 to $79,074 (56 of 168 in ColabContent's read listed a range). Whether to hire a content writer or have the system built is answered in the comparison table on this content specialist page: name the system, price the build (from $10,000, our published price), and hire when the work changes every week or AI is the product you sell.

Is a copywriter the same as a content specialist?

Yes, in the postings we read copywriter describes the same job as content specialist, and the postings we read commonly ask for writing and editing for the web, email and social channels in a consistent brand voice and for social media content, including short video that is shot and edited in house. The content specialist pay table above applies to copywriter, and so does the qualifications gap: judge the person on shipped work, not the title.

What does a content strategist cost?

Content strategist is a content specialist posting under another name, so the year-one cost at the listed midpoint is about $108,005 with benefits and recruiting (calculator above). Before posting a content strategist job, write down the system that person would build in their first ninety days. For this role that is usually a facts file and a publishing check: every claim on every page tied to a source, and nothing published that is not on the file, and ColabContent can price that as a build.

How should I budget for a content marketing specialist?

Treat content marketing specialist as the content specialist role for budgeting: the year-one figure above applies. The first thing that goes wrong after this hire, in our experience: volume becomes the measure. In our experience pages get published because the calendar says so, and many of them say what the neighbouring pages already said. The six content specialist interview questions on this page are written to catch that before the offer.

See what the content specialist system would cost in your business before you hire.

Describe what the content specialist was going to do. A principal replies within one business day with what we would build in place of the content specialist hire, a scoped fixed price and how long it takes, and says plainly if hiring is the better answer.
