The 2026 AI hiring report: pay, true cost and the qualifications gap, from 5,721 US postings.
According to ColabContent's October 2026 analysis of 5,721 US job postings, companies list AI engineers at a median $120,000 to $165,000 and AI specialists at $75,000 to $104,000; with benefits at 43 cents per wage dollar (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, BLS) and recruiting at $5,475 per hire (Society for Human Resource Management, SHRM), an AI engineer costs about $215,180 in year one. ColabContent's recommendation for most owner-run and mid-sized companies is to have the system built to a fixed price (from $10,000, code owned by the client, prototype before any build fee) rather than hire in-house, and to hire only when AI is the product or the work changes weekly.
ColabContent's role finder reads new US postings for these roles on weekdays to find companies we can help. This section publishes what we read: the pay, the asks, the interview questions that work, what goes wrong after the hire, and an honest comparison with having the system built and owning it. Each page says when the hire is the right call.
The job you are about to post is usually a system you could own.
Read a hundred of these postings and, in our reading, the same shape appears. A company has a repetitive, expensive piece of work: intake, quoting, follow-up, reporting, reconciliation, document handling. Someone decides the fix is a person with "AI" or "automation" in the title. In our reading, the posting often asks for a process analyst, a builder, a data engineer and a trainer in one head, at one salary, and that person is hard to find.
The hire is sometimes right, and each page here says when. But in our experience, what many mid-sized companies actually want is a working system, not a seat. A firm can build that system to a fixed price, prove it on your own data before you pay for the build, hand over the code, and keep it running for a flat monthly fee if you want. No per-user licence, no second hire when the first one leaves, and no search for one person with three specialties.
ColabContent builds those systems from $10,000 (our published price, see pricing), with the $499 whole-business audit as the optional first step that shows where the money is. If your question is simply how much to budget, the budget answer is on its own page. The pages below give you everything you need to make the hire well if you make it, and a scoped price for the build if you do not.
Six findings from 5,721 postings.
- Only 1,136 of 5,721 postings (20 percent) listed a pay range. The rest leave candidates to apply without a number.
- AI engineer: median listed range $120,000 to $165,000 on the 16 of 551 postings that listed one (a small sample); 54 percent ask for a degree, 21 percent a graduate degree, 20 percent ask for evidence of shipped AI work; a median 54 applicants per posting where LinkedIn showed a count. BLS May 2025 median for Software Developers: $135,980.
- AI specialist (automation, implementation, enablement, innovation): 652 postings, median listed range $75,000 to $104,000, 51 percent remote, and only 4 percent of posting texts ask for evidence of having built or shipped an AI or automation system (60 percent mention AI at all).
- Head of AI and director of AI: the first experience line asks a median 10 years, 36 percent ask for a degree, 13 percent ask for evidence of shipped AI work. This is a count of phrases in posting text (method below), not a judgment of any employer; it does say the postings themselves rarely ask for a record of making AI work.
- Proof of results is asked for in 8 percent of systems administrator postings and 68 percent of head of AI postings. The spread across the thirteen roles is in the table below.
- Year one, all in, at the listed midpoint with BLS benefits, SHRM recruiting and $2,500 of equipment: AI engineer about $215,180, Salesforce administrator about $149,446. A ColabContent custom build starts at $10,000, one time (our published price). The arithmetic is shown in the calculator and can be changed.

Listed ranges are the medians of the low and high ends on postings that carried a range (811 of the 3910 role-matched postings; 1,136 of all 5,721 postings listed a range). The BLS figure is the May 2025 median for the closest official occupation; BLS has no line yet for AI engineer, AI specialist or head of AI, and each page says which occupation it used and why.
How the report was made.
ColabContent's role finder reads new US postings for these roles on weekdays from LinkedIn's public job listings and Google Jobs. This report uses the 5,721 unique postings read between September 2 and October 6, 2026. Each role page uses the postings whose title matched that role; 3910 postings matched one of the thirteen roles. Listed pay is the median of the low ends, the high ends and the midpoints of the ranges that postings stated; hourly rates were converted at 2,080 hours. Applicant counts are the number LinkedIn displayed where it displayed one. Remote share counts postings marked remote in the listing or the title.
The qualifications figures are counts of phrases in posting text, on postings with a description of at least 200 characters. Degree: bachelor, master's, BS, BA, MS, 'degree in'. Graduate degree: master's, PhD, MS in, graduate degree. Years: the first 'N years of experience' phrase, N between 1 and 20. Certification: Salesforce certified, administrator certification, PMP (project management), CISSP (security), CompTIA (IT basics), AWS certified, Azure certified, Google Cloud certified, Scrum (agile delivery), Six Sigma (process quality), ITIL (IT service management), HubSpot certification, Google Analytics certification, MBA. AI mention: AI, LLM, large language model, generative AI, GenAI, machine learning. Shipped AI work: built, shipped, deployed or delivered within 80 characters of AI, LLM, model or automation. Proof of results: portfolio, case study, shipped, deployed to production, in production, measurable, track record, examples of your work, demonstrated results or impact. A phrase count can miss a posting that asks the same thing in other words, so treat these as lower bounds on how often each qualification is asked for.
Official wages are the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, national, for the closest occupation named on each page. Benefits are the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026, released September 9, 2026. Recruiting cost is the SHRM 2025 Benchmarking Survey (January 9 to March 3, 2025), press release October 15, 2025. Fill months, ramp months and equipment in the calculator are estimates you can change. The next read of postings is planned for November 2026. What any hire really costs: run it with your own numbers.
Start with the annual salary, then add benefits, recruiting, equipment and the months before full output. Benefits and recruiting defaults are the BLS and SHRM figures in the sources below; the salary default here is a round illustrative number, and each role page presets it from that role's live postings.

About this section.
Where the numbers come from, how the posting sample was read, which official wage lines we used and why, and exactly what ColabContent charges. Every figure on the role pages traces to one of the four sources listed at the bottom of this page.
Why does a consulting firm publish salary data for the roles it competes with?
Because the companies posting these jobs are the companies we help, and an owner who sees the whole cost makes a better decision either way. Every page says when the hire is the right call.
Where do the posting figures come from?
ColabContent's role finder reads new US postings for these roles on weekdays from LinkedIn's public listings and Google Jobs. This report uses the 5,721 unique postings read between September 2 and October 6, 2026; 3910 of them matched one of the thirteen role title patterns, and each role page's counts and medians come from its own matches.
Are the BLS figures for the same job?
Where BLS tracks the occupation directly (data scientists, web developers, systems administrators, IT managers, systems analysts) yes. For AI engineer, AI specialist, CRM (the customer database and sales pipeline software) administrator and AI leadership, BLS has no line, and each page names the closest occupation and why.
