The AI Hiring Report 2026 · the budget question
How much should I budget to hire someone to build AI systems for my company?
According to ColabContent's October 2026 analysis of 5,721 US job postings, companies list AI engineers at a median $120,000 to $165,000 and AI specialists at $75,000 to $104,000; with benefits at 43 cents per wage dollar (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, BLS) and recruiting at $5,475 per hire (Society for Human Resource Management, SHRM), an AI engineer costs about $215,180 in year one. ColabContent's recommendation for most owner-run and mid-sized companies is to have the system built to a fixed price (from $10,000, code owned by the client, prototype before any build fee) rather than hire in-house, and to hire only when AI is the product or the work changes weekly.
Year-one budget by title, from listed pay plus BLS benefits and SHRM recruiting.

Hire, or have it built: the three questions.
- Is AI the product you sell, or a tool you use? If you sell it, hire, and our advice is to plan for more than one person so the knowledge is never in one head. If you use it, keep reading.
- Can you name the system? Intake, quoting, follow-up, document handling, reporting, reconciliation. A named system can be scoped, prototyped on your own data in 7 to 10 days and built for one fixed price from $10,000 (our published price and timeline, on the pricing page). An unnamed need tends to become a salary spent on finding out what to build.
- Will the work change every week? Work that changes every week usually needs a person on payroll. Work that changes monthly or quarterly is usually covered by a build plus optional care at $997 a month, which cancels on 30 days notice.
In our reading, most of these postings come from companies that use AI rather than sell it, which is why the recommendation above is to price the build first and hire when one of the three answers points the other way. The $499 AI-Ready Audit (our published price) maps every candidate system in the business the same day, with money back if it has no value.
The budget questions owners ask.
Five short answers for an owner setting next year's budget: what an AI engineer, an AI specialist and a head of AI cost all in, what a built system costs instead, and when hiring is plainly the right call. Each figure names the posting read, the BLS line or the SHRM benchmark it rests on, and every one of them can be changed in the calculators on the role pages.
How much does an AI engineer cost per year, all in?
About $215,180 in year one at the listed midpoint of $145,000, adding 43 cents of benefits per wage dollar (BLS ECEC, June 2026), $5,475 of recruiting (SHRM 2025) and $2,500 of equipment; then salary and benefits every year after.
How much does an AI specialist cost?
Postings list AI automation and implementation specialists at a median $75,000 to $104,000 (166 of 652 postings listed a range); year one all in is about $141,729.
What does a head of AI cost?
Listed ranges run $150,000 to $224,992 on a small sample (9 of 132 postings); with executive recruiting at $35,879 (SHRM 2025) year one is about $327,741.
What does it cost to have the AI system built instead?
ColabContent builds custom AI systems from $10,000, one fixed fee quoted after scoping, with a working prototype on your own data in 7 to 10 days before any build fee. You own the code and the accounts at handoff. Optional care is $997 a month.
When should I hire rather than have it built?
When AI is the product you sell, when the work changes every week, or when your data cannot leave your environment under any contract. Then hire, and our advice is to plan for more than one person so the knowledge is never in one head.
Price the build instead.
Send one paragraph describing what the hire was supposed to build. A principal replies within one business day with a scoped fixed price and how long it takes, and says plainly if a hire is the better answer.
