The AI Hiring Report 2026 · IT manager
IT manager and IT director salary in 2026, and what the hire really costs.
Current postings list an IT manager at a median range of $120,000 to $170,000 (24 of 228 US postings read between September 2 and October 6, 2026 carried a range). BLS (the US Bureau of Labor Statistics) puts the May 2025 median for Computer and Information Systems Managers, the closest official line to an IT manager, at $175,140. Add 43 cents of benefits per wage dollar, recruiting and a modest equipment line, and year one lands near $219,824 before the hire is fully productive. The alternative for the IT manager work is a system built to a fixed price from $10,000 (our published price) that you own.

IT manager salary in 2026: listed ranges and the official line.
Two kinds of figure, kept separate on purpose. The first is what companies are listing on live postings right now, read by ColabContent's role finder from LinkedIn's public listings and Google Jobs. The second is the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) wage line for the closest occupation. BLS tracks Computer and Information Systems Managers directly; IT manager and IT director titles both fall under it.

What the hire really costs, with your own numbers.
A salary is what the posting says. What the company pays for an IT manager is the salary plus benefits (BLS measured benefits at 30.0 percent of total private-industry compensation in June 2026, about 43 cents per wage dollar), plus recruiting (SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management)'s 2025 benchmark average is $5,475 per nonexecutive hire), plus equipment and software, plus the months before the person is fully productive. Change any number below; the build column is explained on the custom builds page.
The qualifications gap: what the posting asks for versus what the IT manager job needs.
We counted, in the text of the 208 IT manager postings that carried a description, how often each kind of qualification is asked for. The phrase lists sit beside each row; a phrase count over 208 postings says what the postings ask for, not whether the 191 employers who wrote them chose well.
| Asked for in the posting | Share of postings | Phrases counted |
|---|---|---|
| A degree | 45% | bachelor, master's, BS, BA, MS, 'degree in' |
| A graduate degree | 5% | master's, PhD, MS in, graduate degree |
| Years of experience (median of the first stated figure) | 7 years (41 stated) | the first 'N years of experience' phrase, N between 1 and 20 |
| A named certification | 18% | Salesforce certified, administrator certification, PMP (project management), CISSP (security), CompTIA (IT basics), AWS certified, Azure certified, Google Cloud certified, Scrum (agile delivery), Six Sigma (process quality), ITIL (IT service management), HubSpot certification, Google Analytics certification, MBA |
| Any mention of AI | 27% | AI, LLM, large language model, generative AI, GenAI, machine learning |
| Proof of results of any kind | 21% | portfolio, case study, shipped, deployed to production, in production, measurable, track record, examples of your work, demonstrated results or impact |
| Evidence of having built or shipped an AI or automation system | 1% | built, shipped, deployed or delivered within 80 characters of AI, LLM, model or automation |
What the IT manager job actually needs, in our experience. None of the 7 items counted above tells you whether a person can do the IT manager job inside your company. These do:
- An incident they owned end to end, with what customers saw and what changed afterwards
- A software bill they reduced, with the line items
- One implementation delivered on time, and one that ran late with the lesson learned
- A written systems map someone else could run from
Put these in the IT manager posting and ask for them in the interview. If the IT manager candidates you can afford do not have them, that is the moment to price a built system instead of the hire; the form at the end of this page returns a scoped price within one business day.
What the postings ask for right now.
Titles that describe the same job: IT manager, information technology manager, director of information technology, IT director, director of IT and innovation, IT operations manager, manager of IT, director of technology. In our sample of 228 postings from 191 companies (September 2 to October 6, 2026), the most common titles were: Director of Information Technology; IT Manager; Information Technology Manager; Director of IT; IT Director. 18 percent were marked remote.
The requirements we see most often in these postings, in our reading of them:
- Running identity, devices, networks and backups for a company your size, with an incident on the resume and what was learned
- How the company controls access, prevents phishing, and prepares for security or compliance reviews
- Vendor and licence management, with cost reductions you can name
- Project delivery: a migration or implementation finished on time
- Budgeting and a two-year systems roadmap
- Increasingly, automation and AI projects on top of all of the above
Six questions that separate a real IT manager from a resume.
- Describe the worst outage you owned. What did customers see, and what changed afterwards?
- What did you cut from the software bill last year, and how?
- How do you decide what to build, what to buy, and what to leave alone?
- Walk me through your last implementation that ran late. What would you do differently?
- What would our audit or cyber insurer find in the first week here?
- Which part of this job description would you contract out, and why?
Most of these IT manager questions ask for a past result with a number and a failure. In our experience a IT manager candidate who has done the job has both, and one who has only read about it has neither.
What goes wrong after the hire, in our experience.
- Operations eat the week; the projects the hire was approved for slip a quarter at a time.
- One person holds every password, every vendor relationship and every undocumented decision.
- The 'and innovation' half of the title produces vendor demos, not working systems.
- The company pays a director's salary for help-desk work because nobody else can do it.
When the hire is the right call. Hiring an IT manager is the right call once the company has enough people, devices and compliance exposure that systems need a daily owner, usually well before fifty staff. What rarely pays is asking that same person to also build the automation and AI systems. Hire for operations; buy the builds with a fixed price and a handoff.
What an IT manager actually does.
An IT manager or director owns the company's systems: devices, networks, identity and security, the business applications, the vendors and the budget. In a mid-sized company the role is half operations (keeping everything up, patched and secured) and half projects (the new phone system, the ERP (the system that runs orders, inventory and accounting) migration, the automation the owner read about). The second half is where the title drifts toward 'and innovation', and where most of the cost overrun lives.
Postings in our sample increasingly ask the IT lead to deliver automation and AI as well as run the help desk. Those are different skills with different market rates, and a candidate who has both is rare and expensive. The honest split is to hire for operations and buy the builds.
Instead of hiring an IT manager, have the system built and own it.
ColabContent is a custom AI consulting firm in Boston. We look at the whole business, find where AI makes the biggest difference, and build systems the client owns outright: no per-user fees, no lock-in, and a working prototype on your own data before any build fee. For the work an IT manager posting describes, that usually means the systems below. Every price in this section is our published price (pricing page, read October 6, 2026); the build count is our own ledger as of September 2026; the timelines are the ones we publish on the custom builds page.
- The automation and AI projects on the IT roadmap, built to a fixed price and handed over with documentation your IT lead can run
- Intake, routing and reporting systems that take tickets and requests off the IT queue
- An owned internal tool that replaces a rented application and its per-user bill
- A written systems map and runbook so the knowledge is not in one head
| Question | Hire an IT manager | Have ColabContent build it |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay | About $219,824 in year one at the listed midpoint with benefits, recruiting and equipment (calculator above), then salary and benefits every year after | From $10,000, one fixed fee quoted after scoping; the price is on our pricing page. Optional care for the IT manager system is $997 a month and cancels on 30 days notice |
| Time to something working | Time to fill the seat (your estimate in the calculator), then the ramp, then the build | A working prototype on your own data in 7 to 10 days and production builds in 4 to 6 weeks (our published timelines) |
| Who owns the result | You, provided it was documented; often the working knowledge sits with the person who built it | You. The IT manager system's code, prompts, data and accounts are handed over at handoff |
| What happens when they leave | Re-recruit and re-ramp; in our experience, often rebuild | The system keeps running. The runbook and the code are yours; care is optional |
| Breadth of skill | One person, one profile; in our reading the posting often asks for several | Builders, data people and the audit team on every project; 40+ commissioned builds delivered as of September 2026 (our ledger) |
| Risk if it does not work | A salary, plus whatever notice or severance applies | The $499 audit is refunded if it has no value; no build fee until the prototype is seen |
| When this column wins | When the IT manager work is the product you sell, changes every week, or cannot leave your environment; the full test is in the section above | When the need is an IT manager system that works, owned by you, without adding a seat |

Questions owners ask before posting an IT manager job.
Five short answers for an owner deciding whether to post the job: what it pays, what it costs all in, how the role differs from its neighbours, what a built system costs instead, and when the hire is plainly the right call. Each answer rests on a figure or a source named on this page.
What is the median IT manager salary?
BLS OEWS, May 2025, gives the median and mean for Computer and Information Systems Managers, shown on this page beside the listed ranges from current postings in our sample.
How much does an IT director cost all in?
Salary, plus about 43 cents of benefits per wage dollar (BLS ECEC, June 2026), plus recruiting and the ramp months. Run the calculator on this page with your own numbers.
Should the IT manager also run our AI projects?
Only if they have shipped one. Operations and builds are different jobs; most companies get a better result by hiring for operations and buying each build at a fixed price with a handoff.
What does ColabContent build for IT teams?
Automation, intake, reporting and internal tools, from $10,000 one fixed fee, prototype first, with the code and accounts owned by you. The $499 AI-Ready Audit maps the opportunities first.
When is the hire the clear answer?
When systems need a daily owner and the company has real security or compliance exposure. Then hire, and keep the builds separate.
What does an information technology manager do, and should I hire one?
Information technology manager is one of the titles companies use for the IT manager role, and the postings we read commonly ask for running identity, devices, networks and backups for a company your size, with an incident on the resume and what was learned and for how the company controls access, prevents phishing, and prepares for security or compliance reviews. Postings list it at a median $120,000 to $170,000 (24 of 228 in ColabContent's read listed a range). Whether to hire an information technology manager or have the system built is answered in the comparison table on this IT manager page: name the system, price the build (from $10,000, our published price), and hire when the work changes every week or AI is the product you sell.
Is a director of information technology the same as an IT manager?
Yes, in the postings we read director of information technology describes the same job as IT manager, and the postings we read commonly ask for running identity, devices, networks and backups for a company your size, with an incident on the resume and what was learned and for how the company controls access, prevents phishing, and prepares for security or compliance reviews. The IT manager pay table above applies to director of information technology, and so does the qualifications gap: judge the person on shipped work, not the title.
What does an IT director cost?
IT director is an IT manager posting under another name, so the year-one cost at the listed midpoint is about $219,824 with benefits and recruiting (calculator above). Before posting an IT director job, write down the system that person would build in their first ninety days. For this role that is usually the automation and AI projects on the IT roadmap, built to a fixed price and handed over with documentation your IT lead can run, and ColabContent can price that as a build.
How should I budget for a director of IT and innovation?
Treat director of IT and innovation as the IT manager role for budgeting: the year-one figure above applies. The first thing that goes wrong after this hire, in our experience: operations eat the week; the projects the hire was approved for slip a quarter at a time. The six IT manager interview questions on this page are written to catch that before the offer.
