Current postings list a web developer at a median range of $76,304 to $100,003 (94 of 367 US postings read between September 2 and October 6, 2026 carried a range). BLS (the US Bureau of Labor Statistics) puts the May 2025 median for Web Developers, the closest official line to a web developer, at $92,650. Add 43 cents of benefits per wage dollar, recruiting and a modest equipment line, and year one lands near $136,585 before the hire is fully productive. The alternative for the web developer work is a system built to a fixed price from $10,000 (our published price) that you own.

Web developer salary in 2026: listed ranges and the official line.
Two kinds of figure, kept separate on purpose. The first is what companies are listing on live postings right now, read by ColabContent's role finder from LinkedIn's public listings and Google Jobs. The second is the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) wage line for the closest occupation. BLS tracks Web Developers directly.

What the hire really costs, with your own numbers.
A salary is what the posting says. What the company pays for a web developer is the salary plus benefits (BLS measured benefits at 30.0 percent of total private-industry compensation in June 2026, about 43 cents per wage dollar), plus recruiting (SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management)'s 2025 benchmark average is $5,475 per nonexecutive hire), plus equipment and software, plus the months before the person is fully productive. Change any number below; the build column is explained on the custom builds page.
The qualifications gap: what the posting asks for versus what the web developer job needs.
We counted, in the text of the 255 web developer postings that carried a description, how often each kind of qualification is asked for. The phrase lists sit beside each row; a phrase count over 255 postings says what the postings ask for, not whether the 292 employers who wrote them chose well.
| Asked for in the posting | Share of postings | Phrases counted |
|---|---|---|
| A degree | 26% | bachelor, master's, BS, BA, MS, 'degree in' |
| A graduate degree | 3% | master's, PhD, MS in, graduate degree |
| Years of experience (median of the first stated figure) | 3.0 years (70 stated) | the first 'N years of experience' phrase, N between 1 and 20 |
| A named certification | 10% | Salesforce certified, administrator certification, PMP (project management), CISSP (security), CompTIA (IT basics), AWS certified, Azure certified, Google Cloud certified, Scrum (agile delivery), Six Sigma (process quality), ITIL (IT service management), HubSpot certification, Google Analytics certification, MBA |
| Any mention of AI | 18% | AI, LLM, large language model, generative AI, GenAI, machine learning |
| Proof of results of any kind | 12% | portfolio, case study, shipped, deployed to production, in production, measurable, track record, examples of your work, demonstrated results or impact |
| Evidence of having built or shipped an AI or automation system | 1% | built, shipped, deployed or delivered within 80 characters of AI, LLM, model or automation |
What the web developer job actually needs, in our experience. None of the 7 items counted above tells you whether a person can do the web developer job inside your company. These do:
- Live sites you can open on a phone, with the forms working and the speed scores shown
- An integration that broke when a vendor changed something, and how they found out
- Lead capture tested end to end against the real backend, not assumed
- Habits of performance and accessibility, not afterthoughts
Put these in the web developer posting and ask for them in the interview. If the web developer candidates you can afford do not have them, that is the moment to price a built system instead of the hire; the form at the end of this page returns a scoped price within one business day.
What the postings ask for right now.
Titles that describe the same job: web developer, senior web developer, WordPress developer, Shopify developer, front end developer, full stack web developer, web developer and website manager, React and Next.js developer. In our sample of 367 postings from 292 companies (September 2 to October 6, 2026), the most common titles were: Web Developer; Remote Web Developer; Full Stack Web Developer; Senior Full Stack Developer; Full-Stack Web Developer. 58 percent were marked remote.
The requirements we see most often in these postings, in our reading of them:
- Shipped sites you can open, with the performance scores and the forms working
- One modern stack in depth plus the platform the company already uses
- Forms, booking, payment and CRM (the customer database and sales pipeline software) integrations that have run in production
- Performance and accessibility as habits, not afterthoughts
- Analytics, tracking and SEO basics
- Maintenance: updates, security, backups and the small changes marketing asks for weekly
Six questions that separate a real web developer from a resume.
- Open one of your live sites on a phone with me. What would you fix today?
- A lead form stopped sending for a week and nobody noticed. How do you make sure that never happens?
- What does your site score on Lighthouse (Google's page speed test), and what did you change to get there?
- Show me an integration that broke when a vendor changed their API (the connection one program offers another). How did you find out?
- How do you decide what marketing requests to say no to?
- What would you build here in the first ninety days, and what would you leave alone?
Most of these web developer questions ask for a past result with a number and a failure. In our experience a web developer candidate who has done the job has both, and one who has only read about it has neither.
What goes wrong after the hire, in our experience.
- After the launch the work drops to a few hours a week and the salary does not.
- The developer becomes the bottleneck for every copy change, so marketing stops asking.
- Lead forms and tracking break silently; nobody is measuring, so nobody notices.
- The site depends on one person's undocumented setup; when they leave, the next developer wants to rebuild it.
When the hire is the right call. Hiring a web developer is the right call when the website is the product, when there is a real web application that changes every week, or when marketing ships enough pages that a developer is busy all month. For a company whose site is a storefront and a lead form, a fixed-price build, SEO fixes at $2,997 and care at $997 a month cost less than a quarter of one salary.
What a web developer actually does.
A web developer builds and maintains the company website and the web applications behind it: the pages, the forms, the integrations with the CRM and the booking or payment systems, the performance and the fixes. In many postings the role also includes search engine optimisation (SEO, getting found on Google), analytics and attribution, which pushes it toward marketing.
The thing to ask before posting is how much work there really is after launch. A site that is rebuilt every three years and lightly maintained in between does not need a salary; it needs a fixed-price build and a care plan. A product company with a web application that changes weekly needs the hire. Most postings in our sample are the first kind written as if they were the second.
Instead of hiring a web developer, have the system built and own it.
ColabContent is a custom AI consulting firm in Boston. We look at the whole business, find where AI makes the biggest difference, and build systems the client owns outright: no per-user fees, no lock-in, and a working prototype on your own data before any build fee. For the work a web developer posting describes, that usually means the systems below. Every price in this section is our published price (pricing page, read October 6, 2026); the build count is our own ledger as of September 2026; the timelines are the ones we publish on the custom builds page.
- A site checked for Google and AI-search visibility before launch, with every lead form tested through the live system
- SEO fixes at $2,997 one time, done in 14 days, and care at $997 a month that cancels on 30 days notice
- Lead capture, booking and quoting flows wired to your CRM with delivery confirmed, not assumed
- Internal web tools your team uses daily, owned by you
| Question | Hire a web developer | Have ColabContent build it |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay | About $136,585 in year one at the listed midpoint with benefits, recruiting and equipment (calculator above), then salary and benefits every year after | From $10,000, one fixed fee quoted after scoping; the price is on our pricing page. Optional care for the web developer system is $997 a month and cancels on 30 days notice |
| Time to something working | Time to fill the seat (your estimate in the calculator), then the ramp, then the build | A working prototype on your own data in 7 to 10 days and production builds in 4 to 6 weeks (our published timelines) |
| Who owns the result | You, provided it was documented; often the working knowledge sits with the person who built it | You. The web developer system's code, prompts, data and accounts are handed over at handoff |
| What happens when they leave | Re-recruit and re-ramp; in our experience, often rebuild | The system keeps running. The runbook and the code are yours; care is optional |
| Breadth of skill | One person, one profile; in our reading the posting often asks for several | Builders, data people and the audit team on every project; 40+ commissioned builds delivered as of September 2026 (our ledger) |
| Risk if it does not work | A salary, plus whatever notice or severance applies | The $499 audit is refunded if it has no value; no build fee until the prototype is seen |
| When this column wins | When the web developer work is the product you sell, changes every week, or cannot leave your environment; the full test is in the section above | When the need is a web developer system that works, owned by you, without adding a seat |
Prices are published: the AI-Ready Audit is $499 with a same-day report and money back if it has no value; custom systems start at $10,000; the full ladder is on the pricing page. Use the form below to describe the job and get a scoped price for the build.
Questions owners ask before posting a web developer job.
Five short answers for an owner deciding whether to post the job: what it pays, what it costs all in, how the role differs from its neighbours, what a built system costs instead, and when the hire is plainly the right call. Each answer rests on a figure or a source named on this page.
What is the median web developer salary?
BLS OEWS, May 2025, gives the median and mean for Web Developers; listed ranges from current postings in our sample sit beside it on this page.
How much does it cost to hire a web developer all in?
Salary plus about 43 cents of benefits per wage dollar (BLS ECEC, June 2026), plus recruiting and ramp. The calculator on this page runs your numbers.
Is it cheaper to hire a web developer or an agency?
For a site that changes a little each month, a fixed-price build plus a care plan costs a fraction of a salary. For a web application that changes weekly, the hire wins. Count the real hours first.
What does ColabContent charge for website work?
SEO fixes are $2,997 one time done in 14 days; care is $997 a month; custom builds start at $10,000, one fixed fee, prototype first, code owned by you.
When is the hire clearly right?
When the site is the product or the application changes every week. Then hire, and keep the maintenance in-house.
What does a senior web developer do, and should I hire one?
Senior web developer is one of the titles companies use for the web developer role, and the postings we read commonly ask for shipped sites you can open, with the performance scores and the forms working and for one modern stack in depth plus the platform the company already uses. Postings list it at a median $76,304 to $100,003 (94 of 367 in ColabContent's read listed a range). Whether to hire a senior web developer or have the system built is answered in the comparison table on this web developer page: name the system, price the build (from $10,000, our published price), and hire when the work changes every week or AI is the product you sell.
Is a WordPress developer the same as a web developer?
Yes, in the postings we read WordPress developer describes the same job as web developer, and the postings we read commonly ask for shipped sites you can open, with the performance scores and the forms working and for one modern stack in depth plus the platform the company already uses. The web developer pay table above applies to WordPress developer, and so does the qualifications gap: judge the person on shipped work, not the title.
What does a Shopify developer cost?
Shopify developer is a web developer posting under another name, so the year-one cost at the listed midpoint is about $136,585 with benefits and recruiting (calculator above). Before posting a Shopify developer job, write down the system that person would build in their first ninety days. For this role that is usually a site checked for Google and AI-search visibility before launch, with every lead form tested through the live system, and ColabContent can price that as a build.
How should I budget for a front end developer?
Treat front end developer as the web developer role for budgeting: the year-one figure above applies. The first thing that goes wrong after this hire, in our experience: after the launch the work drops to a few hours a week and the salary does not. The six web developer interview questions on this page are written to catch that before the offer.
Price the build instead.
Send one paragraph describing the job. A principal reads it, replies within one business day with what a build would cost and how long it takes, and says plainly if a hire is the better answer. No call required to get the number.
