The Vertical Software Pricing Index, 2026.

Most vertical software will not tell you what it costs. We tried to price 327 products across 19 industries, and of the 301 where the answer could be determined, 217 publish no dollar figure anywhere on their own website. That is 72.1 percent quote-only. Widen it to products that publish no complete price list, counting the ones that show an entry tier and gate everything above it, and the figure is 262 of 301, or 87.0 percent. The finding underneath that one is stranger: the prices exist anyway. Of the 231 products in this index carrying any dollar figure at all, 192 of them, 83.1 percent, carry a figure the vendor did not publish, and for 133 products the entire public price record was written by somebody other than the company selling the software. Only 47 of 327 records rest on a price the vendor itself published, and only 25 of those on a dated, direct fetch of the vendor's own page. Every row below carries its tag, its named source and the date it was consulted, and the sample's selection bias is stated in full before the first number.

Built 2026-08-27. 327 products, 19 industry clusters, one row each, published in full on this page with no email gate. This is a disclosure study, not a value study: it measures what vendors tell buyers, not whether the software is worth the money.

What this index is.

It is one table, assembled by hand, answering a question that turns out to be surprisingly hard to answer at scale: what does vertical business software actually cost, and who is willing to say so. For each of 327 products we recorded the vendor, the industry, the pricing model, the price band and the unit it is charged in, the one-time implementation fee, whether the vendor publishes any of that itself, where the figure came from, and the date it was consulted. Where nothing could be sourced, the row says nothing could be sourced, which is a result rather than a hole.

The reason to build it was practical rather than academic. We commission custom software for mid-market operators, so we spend a lot of time on the other side of this problem, sitting with an owner who cannot answer a simple question about the four systems their business runs on. The plan was to compile the numbers as raw material for individual comparison pages. The compilation itself turned out to be the finding, because the dominant fact in the data is not how much vertical software costs. It is how rarely anybody can tell you.

Three things about how to read it. First, every figure carries a provenance tag and the tags are not decorative: a REPORTED number is a stranger's estimate and should be treated as one. Second, this is a sample of expensive vertical software drawn from a target list, so the rates in it describe that list and not the software market, and the section below spells out exactly how that skews each number. Third, we would rather print a blank cell than a plausible guess, and there are a lot of blank cells.

Methodology, and the ways this could be wrong.

The index was compiled on August 27, 2026 from three source pools: seventeen research packs built for individual vendor comparisons, a discovery ledger of 252 rows covering 248 unique products across fourteen industry clusters, and the pricing tables on eighteen live comparison pages we had already published. Where those pools disagreed about the same product, the comparison-page row won, then the research pack, then the ledger one-liner. Where they disagreed about a number, we recorded the disagreement in the row's notes rather than averaging it, because the average of two unverified figures is a third unverified figure with a false air of precision.

The four tags, and what each one is worth

VERIFIED means every figure in the band was read off the vendor's own page by a direct fetch, and the row names that page and the date it was read. VERIFIED-LEDGER means the row names a vendor-published source but carries only the sweep date of our discovery ledger, with no per-row fetch receipt. REPORTED means the figure came from a named aggregator or third party and the vendor has not confirmed it. UNSOURCED means no source we consulted produced a dollar figure at all. Across 327 records: 25 VERIFIED, 22 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 190 REPORTED, 90 UNSOURCED.

Splitting VERIFIED in two was a correction, not a flourish. One label was hiding a real difference in evidence, and a footnote would have let the weaker half keep borrowing the stronger half's authority, so the two grades are separate tags in the Tag column and every VERIFIED-LEDGER row says in the same cell what it is missing. Both grades beat an aggregator; only the first is good enough to build a hard public claim on. So the honest headline is not that 14.4 percent of this index is verified. It is that 7.6 percent of it rests on a dated, direct read of the vendor's own page.

One further rule decides where a row lands, and it moved five rows on the last pass: a band is tagged by its weakest source. If a vendor publishes the floor and an aggregator supplies the ceiling, the row is REPORTED, not VERIFIED, because a reader quoting the top of that band would be quoting a stranger. MarketMan, Bullhorn and Lightspeed Retail each pair a vendor-published low with a ceiling a named aggregator supplied. Cin7 and Toast each pair a vendor-published low with a top that no source in the row attributes to the vendor at all, which fails the same test for the same reason: we cannot tell a reader we read it off the vendor's page. All five are REPORTED here, and each one names its vendor-verified figure in its source cell so the good half of the row is not lost with the tag.

What we excluded, and why the denominator moves

The quote-only rate is calculated over determined rows only: 301 of the 327. The 26 excluded rows are ones where a blocked or failed fetch left the question genuinely open, and an unread page is not evidence that a vendor is hiding anything. Excluding them makes the headline rate higher than it would be if we lazily counted every unread page as opacity, so we also publish the bound in both directions. If all 26 turned out to publish a price, the rate across all 327 records would be 66.4 percent. If none of them did, it would be 74.3 percent. The real figure is somewhere in that band, and 72.1 percent is the honest reading of the rows we could actually determine.

Thirty eight further rows were dropped from the index entirely, before any of these counts, because re-sourcing failed or no second independent source landed in the same band as the first. Those dropped rows are a quality signal rather than a gap: they are the figures we could have printed and chose not to.

Units are never merged

Per user per month, per provider per month, per practitioner per month, per technician per month, per firm per month, per location per month, per room per month and per terminal per month are eight different things, and collapsing them into one number is the single easiest way to produce a confident, meaningless average. They are kept apart here. Per user per year rows are reported separately and are never divided by twelve to join the monthly pool. Where a source gave a band, the low and high are summarised separately and no record's band was ever collapsed to a midpoint. Three rows carry a contested basis, meaning the sources disagree about what unit the price is even charged in, and they are flagged rather than silently resolved: EZLynx, where an aggregator publishes a per-user rate while the vendor states no flat rate exists; Epicor Kinetic, where sources disagree on whether a base fee also applies; and Cloud9 Ortho, where sources conflict on the unit.

Two corrections we made to our own instrument

We wanted to count the rows where the absence of a published price was proven at the vendor's own URL rather than assumed, because a null finding is only worth something if it was actually checked. The first pass used a pattern match over the source and notes fields and returned 27. Reading all 27 matched sentences by hand cut it to 18: the pattern could not tell whose page returned the 404, and it could not tell an absence from a successful fetch of a page that did carry prices. Four of those false positives were 404s and 403s on aggregator sites, one was a Wikipedia fetch, and four were vendor pages that were fetched successfully and did carry a price.

Then the hand pass turned out to be wrong too, in the direction nobody checks. It had only ever seen the pattern match's own 27 candidates, so it could throw out false positives but could never find a row the pattern had missed, and it inherited the pattern's blind spots wholesale. Sweeping all 327 records instead of 27 raised 68 candidates, and reading all 68 against a criterion written down in advance produced 22. Nine of those 22 had never been candidates at all. The criterion is: the row names a URL on a domain the vendor owns, this study records a direct fetch of that URL, the fetch found no published price there, and the row is quote-only. Ledger assertions with no fetch receipt are out, blocked and failed fetches are out, and both prior numbers are printed here rather than quietly replaced, because a count that has been wrong twice is the most useful thing we learned about counting anything in this dataset.

Selection bias, stated in full

What this sample is327 products assembled as CANDIDATE TARGETS for ColabContent's 'alternative to expensive vertical software' pages. Rows were selected because the software was believed expensive, entrenched, or quote-gated in a vertical worth writing about.

What it is notIt is not a random sample of business software, not a census of any vertical, and not weighted by installed base or revenue. Cheap self-serve tools are systematically under-represented BY CONSTRUCTION, because they were never candidates.

ThereforeEvery rate in this file describes EXPENSIVE VERTICAL SOFTWARE ON A TARGET LIST, not 'software'. The quote-only rate in particular is inflated relative to the whole market by the selection rule itself, since quote-gating is part of what made a product a candidate.

Second biasSourcing effort was not uniform. The five verticals with live /vs/ pages (law, cpa-accounting, insurance, manufacturing, home-services, 80 records) got direct vendor fetches; the other 14 clusters (247 records) came from a discovery ledger with a sweep date. Differences between those two groups may be measurement, not market.

Third biasIndustry cell sizes range from 10 to 30 records. Any industry with fewer than 10 determined rows is flagged small_sample_warning and should not be quoted as a vertical-level fact.

That block is copied field by field out of the analysis file at build time rather than retyped, because a bias disclosure that has been smoothed for readability is a bias disclosure that has been weakened, and because the two n values in it were typed by hand once and both were wrong. They are counted from the records now. Read the block as a constraint on every number that follows, including the ones we like.

1. Seventy two percent of determined products publish no price at all

217 of 301. The full split is 39 products publishing a complete, checkable price on their own site, 45 publishing part of one and gating the rest, and 217 publishing nothing. Read as transparency, that is 13.0 percent fully open, 15.0 percent partly open, 72.1 percent closed. Not one of the 217 quote-only rows carries a VERIFIED tag, which is definitionally true and worth saying out loud: you cannot verify a price at a vendor page that has no price on it. Those 217 rows break down as 138 REPORTED and 79 UNSOURCED.

2. The sharper number is 87.0 percent, not 72.1 percent

Because a partly published price list does not solve the buyer's problem. A vendor that shows a $49 starter tier and replaces its enterprise tier with a Contact Sales button has told a mid-market buyer nothing about what they will pay. Fold the 45 partial rows in with the 217 closed ones and 262 of 301 products, 87.0 percent, do not publish a complete price list. That is the figure that matches what buying this software actually feels like.

3. The prices exist. The vendor is just not the one publishing them

231 of the 327 products carry a dollar figure from some source. For 192 of those, 83.1 percent, the vendor did not publish it. In 133 cases the vendor publishes nothing at all and a third party publishes a number anyway, which we call a shadow price list. The price is public; the company selling the software simply is not the one making it public. It comes from aggregator profiles, negotiated-deal databases, consultant posts, forum threads, review sites, and in a handful of healthcare cases from a regulatory disclosure the vendor was required to file. That last category is the tell: some of the most useful pricing in this index exists only because somebody was legally obliged to write it down.

4. Eighty four products are genuinely dark

Vendor publishes nothing, and no source we consulted produced a dollar figure either. Not a starting price, not a range, not a leaked forum quote. For those 84 products the only way to learn the price is to enter a sales process, and the only figure you will ever get is the one shaped for you.

5. Only 22 absences were proven at the vendor's own URL

There is a difference between a vendor that does not publish a price and a vendor whose pricing page we could not find. For 22 rows this index names a URL on a domain the vendor owns, records a direct fetch of that URL, and found no published price waiting there. That is the whole set, named in full so it can be re-checked: NetDocuments at netdocuments.com/pricing, which returned HTTP 404; iManage Work (cloud) at imanage.com/pricing/, which returns HTTP 404; Litera (Compare / Litera One suite) at litera.com/store, which loaded and listed four products with no price against any of them; UltraTax CS at tax.thomsonreuters.com/en/products/ultratax-cs, which loaded and carried no figure; Onvio Firm Management at tax.thomsonreuters.com/onvio/pricing/, which is a contact form and a phone number with no dollar figure on it; Planner CS at tax.thomsonreuters.com/en/planner-cs, which returned HTTP 404; AMS360 at vertafore.com/products/ams360, which carries a contact form and a phone number only; EZLynx at ezlynx.com/pricing, which states in the vendor's own words that there is no single flat rate; HawkSoft at hawksoft.com/pricing, which returns HTTP 404; NowCerts / Momentum AMP at nowcerts.com/pricing/, which carries no pricing; Veruna at veruna.com/pricing, which returned HTTP 404; Sagitta at vertafore.com/products/sagitta, which publishes no pricing; ClientCircle (formerly Rocket Referrals) at clientcircle.com/plans, which loaded with no pricing on it; Global Shop Solutions at globalshopsolutions.com/pricing/, which publishes no rate card; JobBOSS2 / E2 Shop System at ecisolutions.com/products/jobboss2/job-shop-software-pricing/, which publishes no figure; Fulcrum (Fulcrum Pro) at fulcrumpro.com/pricing, which returns HTTP 404; Acumatica (incl. Manufacturing Edition) at acumatica.com/pricing/, which publishes no rate; ServiceTitan at servicetitan.com/pricing, which gates all three tiers behind Request Pricing; FieldEdge at fieldedge.com/pricing/, which requires a demo instead of showing a rate card; Workiz at workiz.com/pricing-plans/, which gates all three current tiers; BuildOps at buildops.com/pricing, which loaded and disclosed nothing; FieldPulse at fieldpulse.com/pricing, which loaded and disclosed nothing.

Two things about that list before anyone quotes the number. First, every one of the 22 sits in one of the five verticals where we fetched vendor pages ourselves, which is the second selection bias behaving exactly as disclosed: proven absences cluster where we looked hardest, not necessarily where vendors hide hardest. Second, the rows that did not make it are as instructive as the ones that did. Eleven more rows name a vendor URL on the discovery ledger's word alone, with no fetch receipt. Eight were blocked or returned nothing at all. Five assert an absence without naming a URL a reader could check. Two turned out to be a 404 on an aggregator rather than on the vendor. And five were vendor pages that were fetched and did carry a price. None of those are counted here. The other absences in this study are real but weaker, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

6. Per-seat rates cluster, but the pool is small and mostly hearsay

Fifty one products in the index are priced per user per month in a way that can be compared. The median entry rate is $85 and the median top-tier rate is $200. The floor is $7.00 and the ceiling is $1,500, a range of more than 200 times across a single unit. Thirteen of those 51 rows carry a VERIFIED tag of either grade and only 7 of them rest on a direct fetch; the other 38 are REPORTED. Per-user-per-year products are held out of that pool entirely rather than divided by twelve, and the top of that separate list is Bloomberg Terminal at a REPORTED $24,000 to $30,000 per user per year, followed by UltraTax CS at a REPORTED $1,650 and Autodesk Construction Cloud at a REPORTED $1,284.

7. Implementation is the most biased number in the study

Only 63 of 327 products, 19.3 percent, carry an implementation figure from any source. Among those 63, the median low is $5,000 and the median high is $30,000, running from a stated $0 where five vendors say setup is included, up to a REPORTED $2,000,000 for Manhattan Associates. Do not quote that median as a typical implementation fee, and we would rather you did not quote it at all. A figure exists precisely because the fee was large enough that an aggregator, a consultant or an angry buyer wrote it down; vendors with no implementation fee mostly produce no row here. Fifty eight of the 63 rows are REPORTED and only 4 rest on a direct vendor fetch. Eight of the high values are stated by their own sources as open-ended floors rather than ceilings, so the maximum in this index is a floor on the real maximum.

8. Opacity is not evenly distributed, and the pattern is not what we expected

Nonprofit and education and property and real estate both sit at 94.7 percent quote-only. Auto dealers and repair is at 92.9 percent, insurance at 91.7 percent, wealth and financial services at 89.5 percent, logistics and freight at 88.9 percent. At the other end, CPA and accounting is the most open cell in the index at 39.1 percent quote-only with nine products publishing complete prices, followed by specialty trades at 43.8 percent and health and wellness services at 46.7 percent. The honest caveat is large: the five verticals we already write about were fetched directly and the other fourteen came from a ledger sweep, so some of that spread is how hard we looked. The gap between insurance at 91.7 percent and CPA at 39.1 percent is too wide to be measurement alone, but we cannot tell you how much of it is.

9. In insurance, not one vendor publishes a per-seat rate

Seven insurance products in this index carry a per-user monthly figure, with a median entry rate of $129 and a median top rate of $199. Every single one of those figures is an aggregator's number, unconfirmed at any vendor page. AMS360, AgencyZoom, Applied Epic, EZLynx, HawkSoft, Jenesis and QQCatalyst: seven products, zero vendor-published rates. The same all-hearsay pattern holds in home services, specialty trades, construction and auto dealers, though those cells are smaller. If you are an agency principal budgeting a management-system renewal, every published number available to you was written by somebody who is not selling you the software.

The distribution

Who tells you nothing, by industry.

Quote-only rate, meaning the share of products whose vendor publishes no dollar figure at all, calculated over determined rows in each cluster. The n on each bar is the determined count for that industry, not the record count, and every bar with an n below 10 determined rows should be read as an indication rather than a fact. Bars above the index-wide 72.1 percent line are gold.

Sample is a target list of expensive vertical software, not a market census.

Two readings of that shape. The obvious one is that the buyer-sophistication story does not hold: nonprofit and education, where budgets are public and boards ask hard questions, is tied for the most opaque cell in the study. The less obvious one is that the open end of the chart is populated by categories with a genuine self-serve product tier, where a vendor has to publish a price because the sale happens without a salesperson. CPA and accounting sits at the bottom of this chart because its category contains real self-serve software, not because accountants negotiate better.

The index

All 327 products, one row each.

Every product in the study, with its industry, pricing model, the price the vendor publishes or the words "None published", the one-time implementation fee where any source carried one, the provenance tag at its true grade, and the named source with the date it was consulted. Where a vendor publishes nothing but a third party carries a figure, the cell says so and shows the third-party number beneath, so you can see at a glance whose number you are looking at. Filter by industry or type a product, vendor or pricing model into the search box. The whole table is in the page, so it prints, it copies, and it works with the filter off.

A note on the implementation column. A blank there means no source put a figure on it, which is the case for 264 of the 327 products. It does not mean implementation is free, and in the enterprise rows it very often means the opposite.

By industry

Nineteen clusters, read one at a time.

Ordered by quote-only rate, most opaque first. Each summary gives the record count, the determined count, the split between fully published, partly published and quote-only, and the provenance mix. Where a cell has enough per-user or implementation rows to summarise, the medians are here too, with the fragile ones marked. Five of these clusters have published drill-down pages where individual products are priced out in detail, and those are linked from their sections.

Nonprofit and education 94.7 percent quote-only.

19 products, 19 determined. 18 publish no dollar figure at all (94.7 percent of determined), 1 publishes part of a price list, none publish a complete one. Provenance across all 19 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 0 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 9 REPORTED, 10 UNSOURCED.

Implementation, 4 products carrying a figure: median low $10,000, median high $75,000, observed range $5,000 to $150,000.

Tied for the most opaque cluster in the index. Fundraising platforms, student information systems and learning management suites are sold almost entirely through a quote, and the four implementation figures we could source are the highest median lows outside heavy industry.

Property and real estate 94.7 percent quote-only.

20 products, 19 determined. 18 publish no dollar figure at all (94.7 percent of determined), none publish part of a price list, 1 publishes a complete one. 1 row could not be determined and is excluded from that denominator. Provenance across all 20 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 1 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 16 REPORTED, 3 UNSOURCED.

Implementation, 2 products carrying a figure: too few for a median, observed range $1,500 to $1,500.

The other cluster at 94.7 percent. Property management, investor portals and brokerage platforms almost never publish, and the only two implementation figures we could source, BoomTown and Ylopo, both sit at $1,500 at each end of the band, which tells you how little of this category's real cost structure is on the record.

Auto dealers and repair 92.9 percent quote-only.

14 products, 14 determined. 13 publish no dollar figure at all (92.9 percent of determined), none publish part of a price list, 1 publishes a complete one. Provenance across all 14 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 1 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 8 REPORTED, 5 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 1 comparable product: too few for a median, observed range $495 to $495. Not one vendor in this cell publishes a per-user rate; every figure is an aggregator number.

Implementation, 1 product carrying a figure: too few for a median, observed range $3,000 to $50,000.

Dealer management systems are the archetype of the category: long contracts, deep switching costs, and a single per-user figure in the whole cluster, which is an aggregator number for vAuto and confirmed by nobody.

Insurance 91.7 percent quote-only.

14 products, 12 determined. 11 publish no dollar figure at all (91.7 percent of determined), none publish part of a price list, 1 publishes a complete one. 2 rows could not be determined and are excluded from that denominator. Provenance across all 14 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 0 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 11 REPORTED, 3 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 7 comparable products: median entry rate $129, median top rate $199, observed range $50 to $300. Not one vendor in this cell publishes a per-user rate; every figure is an aggregator number.

Implementation, 5 products carrying a figure: median low $1,000, median high $10,000, observed range $0 to $100,000.

The all-hearsay cluster. Seven products carry a per-user monthly rate and not one of those rates comes from the vendor. Two of the fourteen rows could not be determined at all, and the one product publishing a complete price is the exception that makes the pattern obvious.

Drill-downs: AMS360, Applied Epic, Sagitta, Zywave.

Wealth and financial services 89.5 percent quote-only.

19 products, 19 determined. 17 publish no dollar figure at all (89.5 percent of determined), none publish part of a price list, 2 publish a complete one. Provenance across all 19 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 2 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 6 REPORTED, 11 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 3 comparable products: median entry rate $135, median top rate $195, observed range $39 to $750. Fragile cell: n is exactly 3, the minimum we will report a median for, and one row moving changes it.

Eleven of nineteen rows are UNSOURCED, the highest count in the index, which is a different failure from opacity: for most of these products nobody anywhere has written a number down. The per-user cell is fragile at n equals 3 and should not be quoted as a vertical fact.

Logistics and freight 88.9 percent quote-only.

18 products, 18 determined. 16 publish no dollar figure at all (88.9 percent of determined), 1 publishes part of a price list, 1 publishes a complete one. Provenance across all 18 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 1 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 17 REPORTED, 0 UNSOURCED.

Implementation, 7 products carrying a figure: median low $100,000, median high $600,000, observed range $15,000 to $2,000,000.

Seventeen of eighteen rows are REPORTED, and the eighteenth, Descartes Aljex, carries the cluster's only verified tag, at VERIFIED-LEDGER grade rather than on a direct fetch. So this entire cluster rests on third-party reporting. It also holds the largest implementation figures in the study, with a median high of $600,000 and a top REPORTED band reaching $2,000,000.

Construction 87.5 percent quote-only.

16 products, 16 determined. 14 publish no dollar figure at all (87.5 percent of determined), 2 publish part of a price list, none publish a complete one. Provenance across all 16 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 0 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 12 REPORTED, 4 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 1 comparable product: too few for a median, observed range $85 to $750. Not one vendor in this cell publishes a per-user rate; every figure is an aggregator number.

Implementation, 6 products carrying a figure: median low $50,000, median high $100,000, observed range $3,000 to $500,000.

Not one VERIFIED row in sixteen. Project and financial management platforms for contractors publish nothing, and the six implementation figures we could source have a median high of $100,000, which is the second heaviest cluster in the index on that line.

Agencies and professional services 81.8 percent quote-only.

16 products, 11 determined. 9 publish no dollar figure at all (81.8 percent of determined), 1 publishes part of a price list, 1 publishes a complete one. 5 rows could not be determined and are excluded from that denominator. Provenance across all 16 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 2 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 4 REPORTED, 10 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 2 comparable products: too few for a median, observed range $45 to $200.

Implementation, 1 product carrying a figure: too few for a median, observed range $40,000 to $120,000.

Five of sixteen rows could not be determined, the second highest unknown count, and ten of sixteen are UNSOURCED. Professional services automation is quoted per user and per product simultaneously, which is part of why so little of it lands on the public record.

Dental and veterinary 78.9 percent quote-only.

20 products, 19 determined. 15 publish no dollar figure at all (78.9 percent of determined), 2 publish part of a price list, 2 publish a complete one. 1 row could not be determined and is excluded from that denominator. Provenance across all 20 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 2 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 18 REPORTED, 0 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 6 comparable products: median entry rate $175, median top rate $450, observed range $25 to $1,500.

Implementation, 5 products carrying a figure: median low $995, median high $1,500, observed range $500 to $15,000.

Eighteen of twenty rows are REPORTED and zero are UNSOURCED, which makes this the best-covered cluster in the index by third parties and one of the worst by vendors. The per-user pool here has the widest spread of any cell, from $25 to $1,500.

Ecommerce and retail ops 68.4 percent quote-only.

19 products, 19 determined. 13 publish no dollar figure at all (68.4 percent of determined), 5 publish part of a price list, 1 publishes a complete one. Provenance across all 19 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 1 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 12 REPORTED, 6 UNSOURCED.

The first cluster below the index-wide rate. Five products publish part of a price list, which is more partial disclosure than most clusters manage, and it reflects a category where a self-serve tier usually exists underneath the enterprise sale.

Staffing and recruiting 68.4 percent quote-only.

19 products, 19 determined. 13 publish no dollar figure at all (68.4 percent of determined), 5 publish part of a price list, 1 publishes a complete one. Provenance across all 19 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 2 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 13 REPORTED, 4 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 8 comparable products: median entry rate $97, median top rate $174.50, observed range $24 to $400.

Implementation, 5 products carrying a figure: median low $5,000, median high $35,000, observed range $500 to $50,000.

Applicant tracking and staffing platforms sit at the same rate as ecommerce, with eight comparable per-user rows and a median entry rate of $97. Seat minimums are the recurring trap here rather than the headline rate.

Manufacturing 61.5 percent quote-only.

15 products, 13 determined. 8 publish no dollar figure at all (61.5 percent of determined), 1 publishes part of a price list, 4 publish a complete one. 2 rows could not be determined and are excluded from that denominator. Provenance across all 15 rows: 4 VERIFIED, 0 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 9 REPORTED, 2 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 10 comparable products: median entry rate $57.50, median top rate $175, observed range $8 to $650.

Implementation, 11 products carrying a figure: median low $15,000, median high $100,000, observed range $0 to $1,000,000.

One of the two most directly sourced clusters, and it shows: four products publish complete prices and four rows carry a full VERIFIED tag on a direct fetch. It also holds the largest per-user pool in the study at ten comparable rows, with a median entry rate of $57.50 and a median top rate of $175.

Drill-downs: Global Shop Solutions, JobBOSS2, NetSuite manufacturing, Plex, Paperless Parts.

Hospitality and restaurants 61.1 percent quote-only.

18 products, 18 determined. 11 publish no dollar figure at all (61.1 percent of determined), 4 publish part of a price list, 3 publish a complete one. Provenance across all 18 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 1 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 13 REPORTED, 4 UNSOURCED.

Implementation, 6 products carrying a figure: median low $1,750, median high $6,500, observed range $199 to $500,000.

Three products publish complete prices and four publish partial ones, so seven of eighteen rows disclose something, which puts this cluster fourth on that combined measure behind CPA and accounting, specialty trades and health and wellness services. Implementation medians are modest here, but the range runs to a REPORTED $500,000 for an enterprise property management system.

Home services 60.0 percent quote-only.

10 products, 10 determined. 6 publish no dollar figure at all (60.0 percent of determined), none publish part of a price list, 4 publish a complete one. Provenance across all 10 rows: 4 VERIFIED, 0 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 4 REPORTED, 2 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 2 comparable products: too few for a median, observed range $75 to $125. Not one vendor in this cell publishes a per-user rate; every figure is an aggregator number.

Implementation, 2 products carrying a figure: too few for a median, observed range $500 to $50,000.

The smallest cluster at ten records, and the only one where four of ten publish a complete price. It is also all-hearsay on the per-seat line: the two comparable per-user figures are both aggregator numbers, and the two biggest names in the category were confirmed by direct fetch to publish nothing.

Drill-downs: ServiceTitan, FieldEdge, Workiz, BuildOps.

Law 60.0 percent quote-only.

11 products, 10 determined. 6 publish no dollar figure at all (60.0 percent of determined), 1 publishes part of a price list, 3 publish a complete one. 1 row could not be determined and is excluded from that denominator. Provenance across all 11 rows: 4 VERIFIED, 0 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 4 REPORTED, 3 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 3 comparable products: median entry rate $15, median top rate $65, observed range $7 to $75. Fragile cell: n is exactly 3, the minimum we will report a median for, and one row moving changes it.

Implementation, 3 products carrying a figure: median low $3,700, median high $25,000, observed range $0 to $175,000.

Legal document management is the category we have priced most carefully, and the pattern is bimodal: three products publish real prices, six publish nothing, and the two biggest incumbents both return HTTP 404 on their own pricing URLs. The per-user cell is fragile at n equals 3.

Drill-downs: iManage, NetDocuments, Litera, Relativity and Everlaw.

Healthcare practices 54.5 percent quote-only.

18 products, 11 determined. 6 publish no dollar figure at all (54.5 percent of determined), 4 publish part of a price list, 1 publishes a complete one. 7 rows could not be determined and are excluded from that denominator. Provenance across all 18 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 3 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 11 REPORTED, 4 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 3 comparable products: median entry rate $300, median top rate $300, observed range $50 to $1,000. Fragile cell: n is exactly 3, the minimum we will report a median for, and one row moving changes it.

Implementation, 5 products carrying a figure: median low $2,000, median high $10,000, observed range $500 to $70,000.

Seven of eighteen rows could not be determined, tied with CPA and accounting for the highest unknown count in the index, mostly blocked or failed fetches. What makes this cluster unusual is that several of its best figures come from mandatory regulatory disclosures rather than from marketing pages.

Health and wellness services 46.7 percent quote-only.

15 products, 15 determined. 7 publish no dollar figure at all (46.7 percent of determined), 6 publish part of a price list, 2 publish a complete one. Provenance across all 15 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 1 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 7 REPORTED, 7 UNSOURCED.

Six of fifteen products publish part of a price list, the second highest partial share in the index behind specialty trades, which is what a category looks like when the small-studio tier is self-serve and the multi-location tier is not. Seven rows are UNSOURCED.

Specialty trades 43.8 percent quote-only.

16 products, 16 determined. 7 publish no dollar figure at all (43.8 percent of determined), 7 publish part of a price list, 2 publish a complete one. Provenance across all 16 rows: 0 VERIFIED, 5 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 5 REPORTED, 6 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 2 comparable products: too few for a median, observed range $200 to $500. Not one vendor in this cell publishes a per-user rate; every figure is an aggregator number.

Pool service, cleaning, landscaping and pest control software. Seven of sixteen publish part of a price list and five rows carry a verified tag, every one of them at VERIFIED-LEDGER grade. The two per-user figures are both aggregator numbers.

CPA and accounting 39.1 percent quote-only.

30 products, 23 determined. 9 publish no dollar figure at all (39.1 percent of determined), 5 publish part of a price list, 9 publish a complete one. 7 rows could not be determined and are excluded from that denominator. Provenance across all 30 rows: 13 VERIFIED, 0 VERIFIED-LEDGER, 11 REPORTED, 6 UNSOURCED.

Per user per month, 3 comparable products: median entry rate $59, median top rate $99, observed range $39 to $149. Fragile cell: n is exactly 3, the minimum we will report a median for, and one row moving changes it.

The largest and most transparent cluster in the index. Nine products publish complete prices, thirteen rows carry a verified tag and all thirteen hold it at full VERIFIED grade on a direct fetch, the highest fetch-backed count anywhere in the study. Seven of thirty rows remain undetermined.

Drill-downs: CCH Axcess, UltraTax and Practice CS, Corvee, SafeSend, Karbon.

The honest limits

What this index is not.

It is not a market census. The 327 products were assembled as candidate targets for comparison pages, which means they were picked because somebody at this company believed the software was expensive, entrenched or quote-gated. Cheap self-serve tools are missing by construction, not by accident. Any rate in here describes that target list. It does not describe the software market, and quoting it as though it did would be the exact failure this page is about.

It is not a value judgment. Nothing in this data says opaque software is bad software or that a quote-gated vendor is overcharging. A vendor can gate its price because deals genuinely vary by an order of magnitude across its customer base. Some of the most open vendors here are among the most expensive. The index measures disclosure, and disclosure and value are different axes.

It is not evenly sourced. Eighty records in five verticals got direct vendor fetches. Two hundred and forty seven records in fourteen clusters came from a ledger sweep. Any comparison across that line risks measuring our own effort rather than the market, and the cleanest example is that the four verticals with the highest verified-fetch counts are all verticals we already publish about.

It is not a price list you can negotiate from. Fifty eight point one percent of the records are REPORTED, meaning a stranger's estimate the vendor has never confirmed. Walking into a renewal with a REPORTED figure and calling it a benchmark will get you corrected by a salesperson who has the real number and knows you do not. Use REPORTED rows to know what questions to ask, not to know what to demand.

It is not longitudinal. This is a single snapshot taken on August 27, 2026, with source dates of August 26 and 27 on essentially every row. It cannot tell you whether disclosure is improving or getting worse, because there is no prior edition to compare it to. The point of publishing the method in this much detail is that the second edition can be compared to this one.

It is not complete on implementation, contract terms or renewal escalators. Only 19.3 percent of rows carry an implementation figure, contract terms were captured only where a source volunteered them, and we made no attempt to systematically collect renewal increase histories. Those three lines are where most of the money actually moves, and this edition does not have them at anything like the coverage of the price column.

It does not resolve conflicts it could not resolve. Where two sources gave different bands for the same product, both are recorded. Where sources disagreed about the unit itself, the row is flagged as contested rather than settled. Thirty eight rows were dropped outright rather than printed on one source's word. A cleaner-looking table was available at every one of those decisions and we did not take it.

Questions

What people ask about this data.

How many vertical software vendors publish their prices?

In this index, 39 of 327 products publish a complete, checkable price on their own website. That is 13.0 percent of the 301 products where we could determine the answer. Another 45 products, 15.0 percent, publish part of a price list and gate the rest, usually by showing an entry tier and replacing the enterprise tier with a Contact Sales button. The remaining 217, 72.1 percent of determined rows, publish no dollar figure anywhere on their own site. Read those together and the sharper number is 262 of 301, 87.0 percent, which is the share that does not publish a complete price list. Twenty six rows are excluded from that denominator because a blocked or failed fetch left the question genuinely open, and an unread page is not evidence of vendor secrecy. If every one of those 26 turned out to publish a price, the quote-only rate across all 327 records would be 66.4 percent; if none of them did, it would be 74.3 percent. That is the honest band.

What does quote-only actually mean in this index?

Quote-only means the vendor publishes no dollar figure at all on its own website. Not a starting price, not a per-seat rate, not a tier table with one number in it. A product is not counted quote-only because its pricing is complicated, because it uses modules, or because a salesperson would negotiate the final figure. It is counted quote-only when a buyer cannot learn a single price from the company selling the software. The classification is about vendor publication, not about whether a price exists in the world. It very often does exist: 133 products in this index publish nothing themselves while a third party publishes a number for them.

Which industries are the most opaque about software pricing?

Nonprofit and education and property and real estate tie at the top, both at 94.7 percent quote-only across 19 determined rows each. Auto dealers and repair follows at 92.9 percent of 14, then insurance at 91.7 percent of 12, wealth and financial services at 89.5 percent of 19, and logistics and freight at 88.9 percent of 18. The most open cells are CPA and accounting at 39.1 percent of 23 determined rows, specialty trades at 43.8 percent of 16, and health and wellness services at 46.7 percent of 15. Two cautions before anyone quotes these. First, industry cell sizes here run from 10 to 30 records, so these are readings on a modest sample, not census figures. Second, the five verticals we already write about got direct vendor fetches while the other fourteen clusters came from a discovery ledger, so part of the gap between the open cells and the opaque ones may be how hard we looked rather than how much the vendors hide.

If the vendor publishes nothing, where do the prices on comparison sites come from?

From somewhere other than the vendor, which is the finding we did not expect to be this large. Of the 231 products in this index that carry any dollar figure at all, 192 of them, 83.1 percent, carry a figure the vendor did not publish. We call those 133 of them where the vendor publishes nothing at all a shadow price list: the price is public, the vendor simply is not the one making it public. It comes from aggregator profiles, negotiated-deal databases, consultant blog posts, forum threads, review sites and occasionally a regulatory disclosure the vendor was required to file. Those sources are not worthless and we did not throw them out. We labelled them REPORTED and kept them separate from anything we read off a vendor page, because a number that has been copied between five aggregators is still one unverified number, and a buyer who walks into a renewal quoting it has no idea whose figure it is.

What is the difference between VERIFIED and REPORTED here?

VERIFIED means every figure in the band was read off the vendor's own page by a direct fetch, and the row names that page and the date it was read. REPORTED means the figure came from a named aggregator or third party and the vendor has not confirmed it. UNSOURCED means no source we consulted produced a dollar figure at all. One rule decides the hard cases: a band is tagged by its weakest source, so where a vendor publishes the floor and an aggregator supplies the ceiling, the whole row is REPORTED, because a reader quoting the top of that band would be quoting a stranger. Five rows moved on that rule alone. Across the 327 records, 47 carry a verified tag of one grade or the other, 190 are REPORTED and 90 are UNSOURCED. We split the verified rows into two grades and gave each grade its own visible tag in the table, because one label was doing too much work and a footnote would have let the weaker half keep borrowing the stronger half's authority. VERIFIED, 25 records, records a direct read of the vendor page on a stated date. VERIFIED-LEDGER, 22 records, names a vendor-published source but carries only a sweep date and no per-row fetch receipt, and every one of those cells says so in the same breath. Only the first grade should carry a hard public claim, which is why we are comfortable saying just 7.6 percent of this index rests on a dated, direct read of a vendor page.

What does implementation cost for vertical software?

We cannot answer that honestly, and the shape of the data is the reason. Only 63 of 327 products, 19.3 percent, carry an implementation figure from any source. Among those 63, the median low figure is $5,000 and the median high is $30,000, the smallest is $0 where a vendor states setup is included, and the largest is $2,000,000 for Manhattan Associates, REPORTED. But that sample is drawn almost entirely from the expensive tail, because an implementation number tends to get written down precisely when the fee was large enough to be worth writing down. Vendors with no implementation fee mostly generate no row at all. Fifty eight of the 63 rows are REPORTED and only 4 rest on a direct vendor fetch. Eight of the high figures are stated by their sources as open-ended floors rather than ceilings, iManage's $25,000 above 51 users among them, which means the maximum in this index is a floor on the real maximum. Quote any of these as the typical implementation fee and you will be wrong.

Can I cite this index, and what are the terms?

Yes. Cite it as the ColabContent Vertical Software Pricing Index, 2026 edition, with a link back to this page. All rights reserved, and the one condition is the link. If you use an individual figure, carry its tag with it: a REPORTED number that gets republished as a fact is exactly how a single aggregator estimate turns into an industry consensus that nobody ever checked. If you find a row that is wrong, or a vendor page that publishes a price we recorded as absent, email support@colabcontent.com and we will correct the row and note the correction. We would rather be corrected than cited.

Does an opaque price mean the software is overpriced?

No, and we want to be precise about this because it is the inference the data does not support. This index measures disclosure, not value. A vendor can gate its pricing because the product genuinely configures per customer, because deal sizes vary by an order of magnitude across its customer base, or because its competitors would price against a published card. Some of the most open vendors in this index are also among the most expensive, and some quote-only products are cheap. What opacity does reliably cost the buyer is comparison. When 87.0 percent of a category publishes no complete price list, a buyer cannot build a shortlist without entering a sales process for each candidate, which means every comparison happens after the vendor knows who is asking and what they can afford. That is a real cost, it lands on the buyer, and it is the one thing this index does establish.

Why would a firm that sells custom builds publish this?

Because the honest version helps us more than a slanted one would. We build custom software for mid-market operators on a one-time fixed fee, so we have an obvious interest in a reader concluding that subscriptions are expensive and opaque. That interest is exactly why every number here carries a tag and a named source, why we publish the selection bias in full rather than at the bottom in small type, why we kept the 38 rows we had to drop as a visible count, and why the findings that cut against us are stated as plainly as the ones that help. CPA and accounting, one of our own verticals, is the most transparent cell in the index. Manufacturing has four vendors publishing complete prices. If your read of this data is that your incumbent is priced fairly and disclosing honestly, that is a legitimate read and we would tell you the same thing on a call.
