Call Tracking for Law Firms: Which Ad Channel Brings Cases, Not Just Calls
Call tracking for a law firm should answer one question: which ad channel produces signed cases, and at what cost. The way to do that is to give each channel its own phone line, judge every answered call as a real case enquiry or not, follow it to signed, and show the cost per signed case by channel. We built a working demonstration on sample data, and in it the channel that sent the most calls was the most expensive way to get a signed case.
The problem, in the owner's words
The owner's sentence is: "I spend on five ad channels and cannot tell which one makes the phone ring with real cases." Call counts are easy. A call from someone who wanted a different kind of lawyer, or was selling something, counts as a call all the same.
That is how a channel that sends the most calls can also be the most expensive way to get a case, and nobody sees it until the budget is already spent.
The job this replaces, and what it costs
Postings for this work use titles like marketing operations manager. ColabContent's role finder read 265 US postings in that cluster between September 2 and October 6, 2026; 63 listed a pay range, and the median listed range ran from $80,000 to $116,000, with a median midpoint of $98,800.
Benefits were 30.0 percent of total compensation (BLS ECEC, June 2026), about 43 cents on each wage dollar. The detail is on our marketing operations manager page. We also built five channel-specific AI phone lines for a named law firm, which answered 3,787 calls (counted August 2026), so the firm can see which channel produced each answered call.
How the demonstration works, step by step
The call attribution board below is a demonstration system running on invented sample data. No client uses this call attribution board, and nothing in it is a result anyone achieved. Here is the call attribution board recording, and below it the same path in order.
- Each channel has its own tracking line. The board shows 5 channels, with the lines listed beside each, and every answered call carries its channel.
- Calls are judged, with the reason: a real case enquiry or not. The page shows why 123 of the 142 social ads calls were not case enquiries, led by 62 that were not an injury matter.
- Calls are followed to signed cases. The top tiles read $28,200 ad spend, 361 answered calls, 110 real case enquiries and 21 signed cases, which is $1,343 per signed case.
- The ranking flips between calls and cases. Social ads is first for calls with 142 and $44 a call, and fifth for cost per signed case at $6,300 divided by 3, which is $2,100. The legal directory is first at $600.
- The hours calls arrive are shown by channel. In the sample, 51 percent of social ads calls come after 6 pm, against 7 percent for search ads.
- Any number opens the calls behind it. When a call is later marked signed, the board updates: the directory moves to 32 calls and 5 signed, $2,400 divided by 5, or $480 a case instead of $600.
What the sample data shows
A weekly summary is written from the same numbers: social ads brought the most calls (142) and the most expensive cases, while the legal directory brought the cheapest, from 32 calls.
Every firm, number, caller and amount is invented, and it holds no client's data. It mirrors the kind of system we built for a real firm without being that firm's board. The script that walks the path passed 11 checks.
Hire it, rent it or own it
The job a call attribution board does can be done by a person, by rented software or by a system you own. This table sets hiring, renting and owning a call attribution board side by side, using only what is on this page.
| Hire the role | Rent software | Own a system built for you | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it costs | Salary and benefits; median listed midpoint $98,800 | A monthly fee for as long as you use it | One fixed fee, from $10,000, quoted after the audit |
| Telling a call from a case | Someone listens and logs | Call counts and recordings | Each call judged as a real enquiry or not, with the reason shown |
| Cost per signed case | Built by hand in a spreadsheet | Needs your case data pushed in | Calculated by channel from spend and signed cases, and updated when a call signs |
| Proof behind a number | Whatever the spreadsheet holds | Varies by product | Any number opens the calls behind it |
What building it for your company involves
To build this for your firm we would set up a line per channel, connect where signed cases are recorded and write the rule for what counts as a real enquiry in your practice areas. Your own numbers replace the invented ones.
You do not have to choose a call attribution board on the strength of a demonstration. Order the $499 AI-Ready Audit for your call attribution board, refunded if it does not earn its price, and we will name the first job to build. We then show you a call attribution board prototype on your own data within 7 to 10 days, before any build fee. A production call attribution board is from $10,000, fixed, and you own it when we hand it over; optional care is $997 a month.
Questions people ask
How does it know a call became a signed case?
In the demonstration a signing event arrives from the firm's case system and the call is marked signed. Your version would connect to wherever you record signed cases.
What counts as a real case enquiry?
Whatever your firm decides. The demonstration uses a sample rule and shows the reason for each call, such as not an injury matter.
Do you have real results from this?
We have built five channel-specific AI phone lines for a named law firm, which answered 3,787 calls (counted August 2026). The numbers on this page are from an invented sample, not that firm.
Is this board a real firm's data?
No. It is invented from top to bottom, from the firm and the numbers to the callers and the spend. It mirrors the kind of channel tracking we built for a real firm, without holding any of that firm's figures.
What would call attribution for our firm cost?
Pricing starts at $10,000 as one fixed fee, quoted after the $499 audit reviews your channels and where signed cases are recorded. A prototype built on your own call data is ready in 7 to 10 days, before any build fee.
